  1.                     Guide for Assist_1: Periodic Table

  4. Introduction
  5. ------------
  6. This application will enable you to produce a customised A4 print-out of a
  7. periodic table - the table can be made suitable for all levels of chemistry
  8. students, right up to A level.
  9.  
  10. NB. Since it is possible to place a large amount of information onto your
  11. table at any one time then text is often small - you will really need a good
  12. quality printer (eg inkjet/bubblejet or laser) to get the most out of this
  13. application.

  15. Three basic types of print-out can be generated:
  16. a) Numeric data
  17. b) Property trends
  18. c) Graphical analysis
  19.  
  20. Numeric Data
  21. ------------
  22. This option prints three types of Periodic Table:
  23. (i)   The first is a 'Basic' table showing Name, Atomic mass and Mass number
  24. (ii)  The second type is 'Physical Properties' - you decide which numeric
  25.       properties (or all) you want shown from atomic number, atomic mass,
  26.       boiling point, melting point, density, oxidation states & radioactive
  27.       isotopes.
  28. (iii) Type three shows 'Chemical Properties' - you select from atomic radius,
  29.       covalent radius, ionic radius, atomic volume, electronegativity,
  30.       first ionisation energy & electron structure.

  32. Property Trends
  33. ---------------
  34. You can print a periodic table showing visually (via bar chart) how a
  35. particular trend(s) (from atomic mass, radius, volume, boiling point,
  36. covalent radius, density, electronegativity, ionisation energy, ionic radius
  37. and melting point) varies from element to element.

  39. Graphical Analysis
  40. ------------------
  41. A line graph of a single property (atomic mass, radius, volume, boiling
  42. point, covalent radius, density, electronegativity, ionisation energy, ionic
  43. radius and melting point) can be printed. An option to select the range of
  44. elements displayed is also provided.

  47. Using Assist_1: Periodic Table
  48. ------------------------------
  49. NB. The Trinity.Medium font will need to been have 'seen' by the system.

  51. 1. Load by double clicking, then click on the icon bar to open the Assist_1
  52. window.
  53.  
  54. 2. The program works as a series of 'stages' - you move between stages by
  55. clicking on the Next or Back buttons. The blue rectangle shows the kind of
  56. information that is going to appear on the eventual print-out (greatly
  57. enlarged!) and varies, depending on the type (Numeric data, Property trends,
  58. Graphical analysis) of table selected.

  60. 3. At each stage there are various 'options' you can set (eg type of table &
  61. items you want displayed). Select items (either radio or option icons) by
  62. clicking on them, then move to the next stage with the Next buuton.

  64. 4. When you reach the end of the stages you will not be able to go any
  65. further by clicking on the Next button - at this point you are ready to
  66. print. Start printing by clicking on the Print button. (NB you can actually
  67. print at any stage - if you have not set any later options then the default
  68. options will be selected).

  70. 5. When you have finished printing you will be returned to the stage you
  71. were just on. If you wish to change something, or create a different type of
  72. table, you will need to use the Back button to backtrack to the starting
  73. point.

  76. Registration
  77. ------------
  78. This software is shareware - you try it before you buy it. You may use it
  79. for up to 30 days to evaluate its potential. If you continue to use it
  80. after then you must register it by sending a cheque for 7.99 to the address
  81. below. Print your name and address clearly, state who/what organisation
  82. you want the application registerd to & the name of the application (ie
  83. Assist_1: Periodic Table).
  84.  
  85. By registering you will receive a new copy of the application, with the
  86. unregistered windows that pop up removed. You can also be kept up to date
  87. with new applications as they become available. There is nothing to force
  88. you to register - but if you continue to use it beyond 30 days you are
  89. being dishonest and jepardise future releases.

  118. -------------
  119. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  120. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  121. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. I have not tried them on a
  122. RISC PC, but they ought to be ok!
  123.  
  124. Geography:
  125. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  126.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  127.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  128.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  129.   & Africa.
  130. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  131.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  132.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  133. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  134.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  135. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  136.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  137. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  138.   with Key Satge 3 geography.

  140. Science:
  141. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  142.   against the clock.
  143. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  144.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  145.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  146.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  147. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  148.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  149.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  150.   different each time they are printed.
  151. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  152.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  153.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  154.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  155.   also be produced.
  156. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  157. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  158.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  159. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  160.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  161. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  162.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  164. Word Puzzles:
  165. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  166.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  167. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  168.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  169.   on screen
  170. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  171.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  172. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  173.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  174. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  175.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  176. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  177. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  178. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  179.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  180.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  181.   printed.

  183. Picture Puzzles:
  184. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  185.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  186.   range of abilities.
  187. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  188.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  189.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  190.   levels.
  191. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  192.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  193. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  194.   or columns into their correct positions.
  195.  
  196. Miscellaneous:
  197. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  198.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  199. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  200.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  201.   your own tests.
  202. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  203.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  204. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  205.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  206. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  207.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  208. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  209.   export as a sprite file.
  210. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  211.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  212.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  213.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  214. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  215.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  216.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  217.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  218. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  219.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  220.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  221.   a DTP application.
